Abstract It always shocks columnist Marydee Ojala that the literature on competitive intelligence (CI) ignores the tools that she holds dear. It should surprise no one that these tools are online research tools. Traditional uses of electronic information for competitive intelligence purposes have revolved around specific questions. The technology that fuels data-mining experiments holds promise for CI. However, most of that technology is aimed at knowledge discovery from internally generated data. More promising are data-mining software products that automatically sift through massive amounts of information. Even here, however, the CI practitioner must train the software on what is important. One new company showing promise in this area is TextOre [www.textore.net], based in Arlington, Virginia.
