Abstract The paper discusses how email surveys can be utilized in empirical research on parliaments and MPs. The discussion is based on the general typology for surveys developed by Groves, i.e. the problems of sampling, coverage, response and measurement are included. Empirically, the paper is based on surveys among candidates running for a seat (Direktmandat) in the state legislatures of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. A total of 770 candidates were running in those elections. Due to extensive research it was possible to contact about 70% of these candidates by email. Of those, about 60% took part in our survey, which substantially covered the role the Internet plays in election campaigns nowadays. As it turned out, coverage, response and data quality were considerably good, which allows the conclusion that online research can be included in the standard tool box of empirical research on legislatures.
