Abstract The article compares the results of three surveys that were conducted in methodologically very different ways in the run-up to the last German federal election. The first survey is a representative sample of the German population, the second one is a representative web survey of internet users, the third one is an unsolicited web survey with self-selected participants. The comparison encompasses marginal distributions of single variables and associations between variables. In terms of marginal distributions, the results show considerable differences among the three surveys concerning demographic (age, sex, education) as well as substantial variables (voting behaviour, interest in politics). These differences remain after weighting the samples by socio-demographic and substantial variables. In terms of associations between variables, the results are somewhat more promising: Although one can again find (significant) differences between the three surveys, their magnitude is still considerably smaller.
