Abstract Rapid advances in computer technology and more specifically, with the Internet, have spurred the use of e-mail surveys for data collection. But questions remain as to whether e-mail is a viable means of data collection. The results of a recent study that duplicated an earlier analysis weighing the effectiveness of e-mail surveys against traditional mail surveys are examined, While the more recent study confirmed many of the earlier findings favoring e-mail surveys for data collection, it also produced evidence that weakens support for e-mail surveys, particularly in their response rates.
