Abstract

Although sampling is a challenge in any type of research, survey research is particularly vulnerable to bias based upon the sample. The purposes of this article are to discuss 1) the use of random sampling in survey research, 2) methods to enhance

acquisition of the sample, and 3) the strengths and limitations of four types of sampling methods including telephone, mail, face-to-face (personal) interview, and electronic (Internet) surveys. Examples of survey types are presented and strategies are proposed to improve the sampling process and yield more generalizable findings.
