Web Survey Bibliography
VAS generator (http://www.vasgenerator.net) is presented, a free Web-based tool for generating and customizing Visual Analogue Scales (VAS) for the use in online studies.
VAS is a graphic rating scale, a plain horizontal line that is verbally anchored on each end (e.g. <rarely> vs.<often». Respondents indicate their response (which
may be an attitude, an impression, a judgment, or an opinion etc.) by placing a mark on the line. Methodological advantages of this type of scale include high validity and that very small changes can be detected. VAS are of most value when detecting change with in individuals.
Paper-and-pencil VAS are quite different from computerized versions regarding construction and read out of data. Whereas the construction on paper is very simple (one just has to draw a line), the construction for online surveys can be awkward. Researchers who would like to ere ate a VAS for use on the Internet need to fiddle at least with HTML and JavaScript (or Flash or Java).
Regarding the read out of data the matter stands the very opposite. On paper the measurement of the given rating occurs manually, takes a lot of resources and is prone to errors. Online the read out is automated, fast and exact.
Thus, a tool that would ease the process of constructing computerized VAS is particularly interesting for online studies. VAS generator was built to answer this need.
VAS generator provides two modes for constructing VAS. In the basic mode only the main parameters (Iength and color of the VAS as well as the verbal anchors) can be adjusted to one’s needs. In advanced mode more specific parameters can be customized additionally (number of discrete values, type of marking and width of the VAS).
A preview panel shows the generated scale, where the read out of the submitted data can be tested. Subsequently VAS generator provides handy download of a package that provides everything for implementing the scale in one’s online survey. Data from a study will be reported in the presentation that evaluates the quality of data of scales built with VAS generator.
