Web Survey Bibliography
Scores from the paper-and-pencil version of the Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics (SATS) assess students' attitudes in the areas of affect, self-concept, value, and difficulty of statistics. We revised the SATS, converted it to an html-based interactive format, and posted it on a web site. One hundred ninety engineering students at a major Southwestern University who were enrolled in an introductory statistics and probability course were invited to participate. Data were collected at the beginning and at the end of the course. We will describe the layout of our web site, data collection procedures, and database file management techniques. We will discuss data collection issues regarding response rates, problems encountered due to the nature of Internet data collection, and participant feedback on the process. We will summarize results regarding gender differences and similarities in attitude change in the four subscale areas. Preliminary results indicate approximately a 70% response rate, more gender similarities than differences, and positive increases across the course in two attitude areas.
