Online-Forschung wird in der Regel in zwei verschiedenen Formen betrieben, entweder als Methodenforschung, die das Internet als Instrument der Datenerhebung analysiert, oder als Forschung über das Internet, bei dem dieses als primärer Gegenstand der Analyse fungiert. Obwohl beide Formen der Online-Forschung sich in der Vergangenheit relativ eigenständig entwickelt haben, besteht ein großes Potential des Forschungsfeldes in der wechselseitigen Beeinflussung dieser beiden Forschungsformen. Im ersten Teil des Artikels werden Entwicklungslinien und Tendenzen der Online-Forschung als methodische Forschung beschrieben. Es wird gezeigt, dass ein Grossteil der methodischen Online-Forschung reaktive Formen der Datenerhebung einsetzt. Nichtreaktive Formen der Datenerhebung wurden bisher vergleichsweise weniger genutzt und damit auch weniger reflektiert. Kombinierte Formen der Datenerhebung fristen derzeit noch ein Schattendasein. Im zweiten Teil des Textes wird die soziale Netzwerkanalyse als ein Beispiel von Online-Forschung mit Gegenstandsbezug zum Internet vorgestellt. Es wird gezeigt, wie bislang überwiegend reaktive Formen der Datenerhebung und in einem geringeren Umfang automatisierte, nichtreaktive Formen der Datenerhebung verwendet wurden, um inhaltlich drängende Fragen über Netzwerkphänomene zu beantworten. Der Stand der Forschung auf dem Gebiet der sozialen Netzwerkanalyse legt aber die Schlussfolgerung nahe, dass besonders in der Kombination beider Formen der Datenerhebung ein großes Potential zur Beantwortung offener Fragen liegt.
