Abstract Computer-mediated contexts afford communicators the opportunity to make strategic decisions concerning the self that they present to others. This investigation examined the practice of self-presentation via gender-swapping and gender-monitoring on the Internet, as well as the influence of users' gender schemas and self-monitoring on these processes. To do so, eight hundred twenty three Internet users completed an online survey that assessed general Internet practices, as well as users' gender schemas and self-monitoring. Analyses indicated that to an extent Internet users engage in gender-swapping and gender-monitoring. Further, users' level of self-monitoring was associated with gender-swapping and gender-monitoring on the Internet; however, users' gender schema was not associated with these practices in this context. The discussion section highlights the implications of the results of this investigation for continued research on the presentation and monitoring of gender-related impressions on the Internet.
