Title Effects of internet data collection in business surveys – the case of the Dutch SBS

Abstract

The Structural Business Survey (SBS) measures a large number of indicators of the activity and performance of Dutch businesses. Each year SBS questionnaires are sent out to about 70,000 businesses. After a thorough evaluation, the SBS questionnaires have undergone a complete redesign. This included a reduction of the number of variables measured, a new layout, new (shorter) explanatory texts, a different order of the questions and, last but not least, the introduction of an electronic version of the questionnaire for all respondents. The new design was implemented in 2007.
In a previous paper (Giesen, Morren and Snijkers 2009) the effects of the new design on the response burden have been analyzed. Results showed that new design has reduced both the perceived and actual response burden of the SBS. In this presentation I will further explore the effects of the new design and will focus on the effects of introducing an internet questionnaire (as compared to the traditional paper questionnaire) on the data quality.
