Title Effect of different stimulus on data quality in online panels

Abstract

Online panels are increasingly taking the leading role for online surveys. Fast data access and low costs of research implementation motivates research agencies and marketing companies to use it. In addition, more and more online panels are spreading to the regional and global level, which is one more reason to choose this kind of a tool for data acquisition. A particular advantage is that companies can compare their results with those countries that are strategically more important to them.
So, what exactly are online panels? Online panels are groups of individuals who wish to participate in online surveys, and are then selected by research agencies which invite them via an electronic invitation. To maximize the response rate in online panels, research agencies use different approaches promising a reward in the electronic invitation. This contribution tries to answer the question of how different type of incentives and special emphasis in the invitation without remuneration affects the data quality in the online panels. Data quality is examined with two indicators: the response rate and quality of individual’s responses. As many authors discussed that monetary incentives increase response rate in online surveys, we verify if this hypotheses is also true in the case where incentives are promised with the lottery method. On the other hand, monetary incentives with lottery method can cause lower quality of individual responses.
