Two aspects of quality in survey statistics are their timeliness and relevance. A considerable amount of discussion has taken place in the European Union over the timeliness of economic statistics in comparison with the USA. Part of this difference stems from the different approaches to the definition of the period being measured, and the difference of approach has an impact, often hidden, on the relevance (the degree to which the survey measures the required concept).
