Title Mixing modes in the LFS - Computer-assisted, cost effective and respondent friendly
Year 2011
Access date 11.11.2013
Abstract

The Labour Force Survey (LFS) is by far the largest and most visi-ble household survey in the European Statistical System. The 6th Workshop on LFS Methodology, held on 12-13 May 2011 in Wiesbaden, provided an opportunity to reflect upon the data collection strategy of the LFS. The paper discusses some important challenges that are distilled from the contributions in the workshop. They are aimed at making the data collection process more effective, less costly and at providing better quality results. Issues that were presented all involved computer assisted survey designs including the intro-duction of web-based interviewing (CAWI) for the LFS. Other challenges for effective field work strategies include to offer respondent-friendly design (i.e. let the respondents chose how they would like to provide the information) and to use process data (“paradata”) as well as fieldwork management sys-tems to tailor the survey to the needs of the respondents. The paper focuses on the Labour Force Survey, but these experiences provide an excellent basis to analyse challenges and potential pitfalls also in the other household sur-veys of the ESS.
