Abstract

Survey research often involves information provision to respondents in questionnaires. The information provision allows for measurement of research subjects’ reactions, attitudes, and opinions regarding the supplied information. Web-based survey administration, since it supports multimedia, allows for multiple modes to provide such information, including on-screen text, video, and audio. Empirical data on the optimal mode(s) of information provision would help researchers determine the most appropriate mode(s) to use, given demographic characteristics of their sample. Recently, Knowledge Networks’ KnowledgePanelŸ surveyed a nationally representative sample on views concerning global climate change and climate engineering technologies (i.e., technologies designed to cool down the planet by addressing potential causes of global warming). The study, conducted for researchers from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), provided an opportunity to examine the use of multiple modes of information provision.
