Abstract The corporate mission of Interactive Tracking Systems, Inc. (Itracks) is to provide leading edge, Internet-based quantitative and qualitative data collection tools for market research and management consulting firms. To understand better the needs of its market research and management consulting clients and to guide its marketing plans for the cur rent year, Itracks conducted an online survey of research practitioner attitudes and expectations regarding online data collection tools and services. Itracks created a list of over 5,000 research practitioners using data from online association directories and other relevant online sources. Respondents were sent email invitations to participate in the study and offered an informational incentive: Itracks would provide real-time, online reporting of selected survey results to firms completing the survey. Respondents were also given online access to a final report at the conclusion of the study. As well as motivating participation, allowing firms online access to study data helped to ensure the validity of respondent answers. The Itracks survey provided an overview of the market research industry’s relationship with online research and a picture of the industry’s use of Internet-based research methodologies. It identified areas of concern, as well as needs for education and further inquiry. Survey results indicated that market research firms viewed online surveys and focus groups as complementary tools in the market researcher’s toolkit. While these survey results have been instrumental in shaping Itracks’ own marketing plans, they are also intended to contribute to the public debate about online research methods.
