Abstract This paper reviews the literature related to internal ethics audits and describes a class project that involves the preparation of an external ethics audit via web-based self-directed student inquiry. The activity promotes higher level thinking including critical exploration, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. The assignment includes the following components: (1) consideration of ideas concerning components of successful ethics programs, as presented in identified background readings (available in full-text over the Internet); (2) identification of recommended elements for building a successful ethics program and an ethical corporate culture; (3) location, via the Internet, of the corporate code of ethics of a selected organization; (4) analysis of the adequacy of the ethics program of the selected organization as compared to recommended elements; (5) investigation (through additional reading, interviews, etc.) of the corporate culture of the selected organization; and (6) preparation of an ethics audit involving the comparison of the selected organization's code of ethics to its actual corporate culture and behaviors, and including the areas that are well addressed by the organization and those that need further attention.
