Abstract The major advantages of WWW surveys are the speed and low costs of data collection, so a considerable growth in the use of WWW surveys can be expected in the future. As for now, the WWW surveys are mostly used for the populations with high Internet coverage (computer users, institutions, companies, organisational research, and certain professions). The use of self-selected WWW surveys is also popular, but it is, of course, very limited in the generalisation of results. In this paper, technical and methodological aspects of WWW surveys are discussed. The development and the current stages of programming solutions are presented. Different methodological aspects are then discussed: sampling, promotion, incentives, duration, questionnaire length and layout. The empirical part of the paper is based on data from the RIS survey - the national WWW survey in Slovenia. In addition to the experiments in the RIS 1996 survey (n=1200), the findings from experiments in the RIS 1997 survey (n=3500) are discussed. Some experimental features of the current RIS 1998 survey are also presented.
