Abstract The paper describes the introduction of CAPI in the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP) and examines possible effects. The GSOEP is a panel survey of some 14,000 individuals in 7,500 households, carried out by the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) in co-operation with Infratest Burke. Sub-samples of the panel survey started in 1984 (West Germany), in 1990 (East Germany), in 1994 (immigrants of the last decade) and in 1998 (new cross-section sample). In 2000, a major supplement of some 6,000 households or 12,000 individuals is being added. Starting in 1998, CAPI was introduced in a step-by-step approach. One may call it a ”soft strategy” of introducing CAPI in a longitudinal survey, trying to avoid risks in terms of response rates and data comparability. The paper describes strategy and achievements in more detail. The focus is on procedures of applying different methods of interviewing side by side, i.e. PAPI, CAPI and self-administered interviews. In a first phase, mode effects have been tested using a quasi experimental design for fieldwork. In second phase, starting in 2000, a more flexible approach is being used trying to respect individual preferences for interviewing methods on the side of interviewers as well as respondents.
