Abstract
This chapter offers a precise and thoroughly tested estimate of the impact of using a smartphone on item response times. The comparison is made between desktop and smartphone users when they use a voting advice application that was specifically designed to be used on smartphones. The analysis shows that i) after taking into account item and user characteristics that are known to affect response times and ii) using the most suitable statistical models, using a smartphone instead of a desktop is expected to increase by 17% the geometric mean of item response times.
