Abstract Some beginning dos and don'ts for designing user-friendly online surveys that can help you collect valuable data via the Web are presented. You should not reinvent the wheel. Use basic guidelines from the literature on how to design traditional surveys delivered face-to-face, by telephone, or by direct mail. Then, look at some online surveys to see what works and what does not. Some factors to consider when designing an online survey include: 1. editing, 2. pretest, 3. the title, 4. the introduction, 5. screening questions, 6. length, 7. promotional tie-ins, 8. open-ended questions, and 9. wrap-up.
