Abstract For almost every traditional approach to survey data collection there is now a computer assisted alternative. The focus of this paper is on the two most widespread - Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) and Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI). In it, we provide an update on the extent of adoption of these approaches among UK survey suppliers and move on to discuss their impact. Our particular focus is on the impact on survey agencies and the industry of the more intrusive technology of CAPI.
