Abstract Bill Blythe presents an up-to-the-minute overview of the history and use of technology in data collection. He demonstrates how use of the main technologies has evolved and pinpoints the drivers and obstacles to adoption. The paper covers a wide range of technologies including ‘traditional’ CAPI and CATI as well as self-completion, voice recognition, scanning and touch-tone. The paper also addresses management and cost issues and takes in the legislative and employment framework. He spells out the requirements for successful implementation and take-up and concludes by making predictions about the future, identifying the data collection challenges that face research in the future.
