Abstract The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has conducted tests of microcomputer-based voice recognition technology as an alternative to traditional mail and telephone data collection methods. Results of current research are provided covering performance measures, respondent reaction to Voice Recognition and Touchtone automated self-response methods, data quality measures, collection cost implications, hardware and software requirements, and current limitations of technology. Future developments in voice recognition technology are also discussed. The results indicate that survey designers should reevaluate traditional collection methods.
