Title The Internet and Social Research: New Opportunities, New Challenges
Year 2004
Access date 01.09.2004
Abstract The dramatic growth in the use of the Internet has created new opportunities for conducting social and behavioural research online – both quantitative and qualitative. In recent years, there has been a proliferation of surveys on the world wide web which are often quicker and cheaper to set up than surveys using traditional methods of data collection. At the same time qualitative researchers have begun to explore the Internet’s potential for interviewing respondents using email, bulletin boards or synchronous chat. These developments, exciting as they are, appear to have come ahead of detailed enquiry into the methodological ‘pros’ and ‘cons’ of Internet-based research. Using the Internet for research raises a number of issues such as online and offline sampling, mode effect, integration of data and cyberethics. All these issues merit investigation. The session will focus on the methodological challenges presented by conducting research – quantitative and qualitative – on the world wide web. By examining the the rapid emeregence of the Internet as research tool, this session will advance our understanding of the opportunities and challenges this medium presents for social researchers.
