Abstract Researchers and research associations are addressing the Internet with excitement and apprehension. They recognize the great opportunities that exist using this new methodology, but are also concerned that professional practices and ethical principles are maintained. ESOMAR, the European Society for Opinion and Marketing Research, has been working with the Advertising Research Foundation, the American Marketing Association, the Council of American Survey Research Organizations, and the Marketing Research Association in formulating guidelines for conducting research on the Internet. The guidelines are presented.
