Abstract Many different types of format have been used in web surveys. In addition to the obvious substantive differences, web surveys vary primarily in their patterens of navigation in their physical layout of questions and answers. With respect to the various navigational system used in web surveys we have withnessed dynamic screen-by-screen and static horizontal/vertical-scrooling techniques, and physical layouts that involve right, left, and center alignment of answer categories. While the web offers tremendous potential in varying the navigation and layout of questionarrie, there is currently no experimental research that provides any theoretical justification for using one approach over another, or, that suggests why one might be more efficient than the other.
