Title Visual Design Effects in Web Surveys

Abstract The World Wide Web offers many more opportunities for innovative design of survey and experimental instruments or questionnaires. One of these aspects is the ease with which rich visual images can be used. Visual elements of Web instruments can range from the choice of background color or design to the inclusion of full-color photographs as stimulus material, and includes everything in between. While these graphical or visual tools allow the research to greatly extend the measurement opportunities, their use many also change to measurement in fundamental ways. I will review the various types of visual design elements that can be used, discuss some of the theoretical and research issues surrounding the use of such visual elements, and present research findings on the effects of visual elements on the responses obtained in Web surveys.
