Abstract This paper examines interviewer keying errors in a CAPI survey. Recorded responses to 16,778 closed-ended questions in 116 interviews were compared to audio tapes of the answers provided by respondents. A total of only 16 keying errors were detected, for an overall error rate of 0.095%. This finding helps to alleviate concerns about keying errors to fixed-response questions in a CAPI survey.
