Abstract This paper introduces client side paradata in the field of websurveys. Client side paradata result from capturing meaningful respondent actions at the level of individual survey questions. Survey researchers can use these data to answer a multitude of (methodological) research questions, particularly questions which need a detailed description of response behavior. This paper not only discusses client side paradata in general terms, but also presents the necessary software to enable websurveys of third parties to collect client side paradata. Furthermore, some examples demonstrating the possibilities of client side paradata are presented. It is shown how these data allow to detect changing responses to questions, the sequence in which items are answered, and the time needed to answer questions (in milliseconds). The intention of this paper is to motivate survey researchers to include client side paradata in their own websurveys, so that a more general methodology and deontology on the use of client side paradata can be developed.
