Title The use of material and nonmaterial incentives in Web-based studies: A review
Year 2005
Access date 19.10.2005
Abstract The paper presents a review of the effectiveness of material and nonmaterial incentives to influence participation in Web-based studies. It covers several meta-analyses and experiments conducted by myself or by other authors. Topics discussed are the use of material incentives versus no incentives, the comparative effectiveness of different kinds of incentives (e.g., lotteries, gift certificates, gifts, cash, donations to charity, redeemable loyalty points, result summaries), the discussion of context factors that do or do not moderate the effectiveness of incentives (e.g., length of the study, type of sample, fieldtime of study, use of reminders), the longterm effects of incentives in online panels, the use of conditional incentives versus unconditional ones, and the effectiveness of incentives when recruiting participants for online-panels.
