Dr. Jason A. Ferris

Dr Jason Ferris is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR) at The University of Queensland and holds an NHMRC Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. He works jointly with the Policing and Security Program (with Professor Lorraine Mazerolle) and the Research Methods and Social Statistics (with Professor Michele Haynes) and leads the Drug Alcohol and Crime Research (DACR) program.

Jason has a PhD in Alcohol Epidemiology (University of Queensland), Masters degree in Biostatistics (University of Melbourne) and a first class honours degree in Psychology (James Cook University). He is a GStat member of the Statistical Society of Australia and an active member the Australian Market and Social Research Society and Australasian Professional Society of Alcohol and Drugs (APSAD), Kettil Bruun Society (KBS) and American Society of Criminology (ASC; Division of Experimental Criminology).

With more than ten years of social science and public health research experience he is an expert in epidemiological, longitudinal, bio-statistical and spatial analysis methods, drawing on both criminological and public health theories to better understand policy responses to drug and alcohol problems at the local, state and national levels. Jason has been a principal researcher on a number of collaborative research grants and tenders from funding bodies such as Department of Health and Aging, Australian National Preventive Health Agency, Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education, Australian Research Council Linkage, Criminolog Research Council, and National Health and Medical Research Council (over $1million).

He has a well-established publication record, focusing on alcohol and drug research, sexual health, and adolescent health. His work has been published in various journals, including Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs; Drug and Alcohol Review; Addiction Research and Theory; Addiction; Field Methods; BMC Medical Research Methods; and Journal of Sexual Medicine. Jason is a member of a number of advisory boards including the Queensland Alcohol and Drug Research and Education Centre (QADREC) and the Centre for Youth Substance Abuse Research (CYSAR). He is also an ongoing member of the scientific committee for the Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol & other Drugs (APSAD) and was a member of the scientific committee for the recent Australasian Drug and Alcohol Straegy Conference (2015).
