Abstract Since early 2000, CBS News has been relying on a Web TV-equipped panel to gauge public reaction to scheduled news events, such as State of the Union messages and presidential debates. For last year's third presidential debate, CBS News used the panel to conduct an instant focus group with a representative nationwide sample of more than 400 registered voters watching the debate. Respondents transmitted their reactions to the candidates (measured by a sliding scale) on a moment-by-moment basis. CBS News was able to report not just voters' overall perceptions of the debate, but what specific statements affected Republicans, Democrats and Independents. Specifically, this presentation will describe: · The process of testing and carrying out this project, · The projects strengths and weaknesses, · How CBS News used the results to help explain the debate.
