Web Survey Bibliography
There has been a huge increase in the number of social science surveys conducted over the Internet in the last decade, especially in the area of quantitative research. Interest in this method has generated abundant literature, almost all of it in English-speaking world. The present article provides an exhaustive list of the questions raised in the literature by this survey method. They fall into two categories: issues relating to sampling procedures (who exactly responds to Web surveys?) and concerns about effects of the survey mode (what is the quality of responses elicited by Web surveys?). While there is consensus in one or two areas, researchers' analyses are otherwise widely divergent. Many agree that random sampling is extremely difficult to achieve over the Internet, but the procedures used to compensate for sampling bias (weighting, post-stratification, propensity score adjustment) are strongly contested. Similarly, regarding the use of new technologies for innovative questionnaire design, studies demonstrating real and reproducible effects are still few and far between. The present article, which also cites examples of good practice, concludes by setting out the vital precautions to taken when designing a Web survey for social science research.
Las encuestas sociales realizadas por Internet han proliferado durante el último decenio, particularmente en el dominio de la investigación cuantitativa. El interés suscitado por este método ha producido una literatura que proviene integralmente del mundo anglosajón. Parecía pues indispensable que los debates en torno a la encuesta por Internet fueran accesibles al lector francófono. A partir de un examen de la literatura existente, el artículo ofrece un inventario exhaustivo de las cuestiones que este método plantea, y que son de dos tipos: los problemas ligados a los procedimientos de muestreo (¿quién responde a las encuestas por Internet?), y los que se refieren al efecto “modo” generado por este tipo de encuesta (¿cuál es la calidad de las respuestas producidas?). Aparte de algunos puntos de acuerdo, los análisis de los investigadores no son muy convergentes. Si muchos de ellos piensan que el muestreo aleatorio es muy difícil de obtener por Internet, la eficacia de los procedimientos de corrección de la muestra (ponderación, post-estratificación, ponderación por el inverso de la propensión a formar parte de la muestra) es muy discutida. Del mismo modo, cuando se trata de sacar partido de las nuevas posibilidades técnicas en términos de concepción del cuestionario, las investigaciones mostrando efectos reales reproductibles son todavía poco numerosas. El artículo, que propone también una serie de prácticas recomendables, concluye sobre las precauciones indispensables que hay que tomar cuando se crea una encuesta por Internet con una perspectiva de investigación en ciencias sociales.
