Abstract

The aim of this study is the validation of the Russian version of the Schwartz Value Survey (SVS) using cognitive interviewing and quantitative methods. This paper aims to explore the issue of whether respondents interpret the values measured in the survey in the way intended by Schwartz. Analysis of the results revealed problems with understanding the wording, which are due both to subtle differences in translation and the cultural context. In addition we performed a multidimensional scaling and a confirmatory factor analysis to check, whether the problems found in the qualitative analysis could be also diagnosed by these quantitative methods. The findings of the qualitative analysis allowed a better understanding of the quantitative analysis and vice versa. However the results differed in a considerable way. A number of recommendations are given for using such a mixed method approach and more specifically to the researchers applying this Russian-language SVS.
Keywords: values, SVS, cognitive interviewing, mixed methods, confirmatory factor analysis, multidimensional scaling.
