Abstract Het invullen van standaardvragenlijsten is niet altijd even leuk voor respondenten, met negatieve gevolgen voor de respons en de kwaliteit van de antwoorden. De traditionele matrixvraag ligt onder vuur en wordt gekenschetst als demotiverend. Een aantrekkelijk alternatief is de scrollmatrix. Het principe van de scrollmatrix is dat telkens maar één stelling zichtbaar is. Zodra een antwoord is ingevuld, verschijnt automatisch de volgende stelling. Om de effectiviteit van de scrollmatrix in vergelijking met de traditionele matrix te onderzoeken, heeft onderzoeksbureau Flycatcher in samenwerking met de Universiteit Utrecht een grootschalig online experiment uitgevoerd onder leden van het Flycatcher panel. Uit dit experiment bleek dat bij gebruik van de scrollmatrix minder respondenten vroegtijdig afbreken en dat de datakwaliteit beter is. De responsbias is lager dan bij de standaard matrix. Dit geldt voor alle onderzochte vormen van responsbias: straightlining, beperkte response range, en tendensen voor extreme antwoorden en neutrale antwoorden. Het type vraag had géén invloed op de inter-item-correlatie en de betrouwbaarheid van indices. Tot slot bleek dat panelleden de scrollmatrix prettiger vonden om in te vullen en gaven zij aan dat het invullen in hun beleving sneller leek te gaan.
