Web Survey Bibliography
Operating a personal home page provides the individual with an opportunity for self-presentation which potentials go far beyond that of traditional media. Owners can make use of the full scope of internet media, are relatively unrestricted by limitations of space and other resources, and may present themselves to a virtually unlimited audience spread over the entire world. These features make research on personal home pages a potentially fruitful avenue for the study of self-presentational strategies, as is evident from the growing attention the topic has received from psychology as well as other disciplines in recent years. The question of representativeness of the samples used in this research, however, has hardly been addressed to date.
The present paper reviews the sampling procedures employed in previous research with respect to their representativeness for the universe of personal home pages. It is argued that serious systematic distortion is likely to be present with most of these approaches. As a potential solution to this problem, an alternative approach is proposed which is based on the use of search engines. A sample of about 200 personal home pages has been drawn by means of this procedure. Preliminary results of a content analysis for this sample, tapping into formal as well as substantive aspects, are presented and compared with previous findings. In addition, we present a second proposal related to the problem of systematic self-selection, which may arise when additional data are to be collected directly from the owners of the personal home pages.
