Abstract Open Web surveys based upon self-selection poses serious problems concerning sampling and control of the sample. The division between the real and the technical respondent makes identification of respondents problematic in principle, but a central examination must address the seriousness of these problems. How often and under which specific circumstances will self-selection pose actual threats to a survey? To a certain extent the analysis of this problem can be approached using the technical means available from the tools used for construction and implementation of web surveys: in this case the http protocol, html, asp. Applying these using cookies, IP address identification among other things the problems concerning respondents and sampling can be approached. Although this paper focuses on technical tools it is obvious that this can not constitute a full analysis of the problem, and alternative and supplementing methods and options are discussed based upon the preliminary technical examination.
Case data originates from a web survey of a Danish literary web site (www.litteratursiden.dk) from 2004, and a method for analysis and evaluation of sampling problems was developed resulting in the generation of a database focusing on various aspects of sampling. This database is being used for a detailed examination of the characteristics as well as the seriousness of the sampling problems.
