Robert M. Kaplan

Robert Kaplan is chief science officer at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Previously, he was associate director for behavioral and social sciences and director of the Office for Behavioral and Social Sciences Research in the National Institutes of Health. Prior to his federal service, Kaplan was at UCLA where he was a distinguished professor in health policy/management and in medicine. He was principal investigator of the California Comparative Effectiveness and Outcomes Improvement Center and led the AHRQ-funded health services training program and the Prevention Research Center at UCLA/RAND. The recipient of numerous honors and awards, Kaplan was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2005. He currently co-chairs the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences Subcommittee of the Committee on Science, which is part of the President's National Science and Technology Council.
