Dr. Wagenaar’s research focuses on three broad areas: (1) group-randomized or controlled time-series trials of preventive interventions at the state, community and institutional levels designed to improve the health of children and adolescents; (2) empirical evaluations of the effects of national, state and local public health policies; and (3) meta-analyses of the literature on these topics. Particular content foci include alcohol use, automobile crashes, injuries and violence.

Dr. Wagenaar is Associate Director of the National Public Health Law Research Program, a collaboration with Temple, Harvard and Duke universities. This program is defining and building the theory and scientific basis for the emerging field of empirical research that involves collaboration between legal scholars and health scientists. The content scope of the program includes any law or regulation that may have important beneficial or deleterious effects on any cause of disease or injury. He also collaborates with the national Promise Neighborhood Research Consortium, studying optimum science-based policies and programs to enhance the health and well-being of residents in poor neighborhoods nationwide.
