International Total Survey Error Workshop 2010 - Call for papers

Dec 25 2009

The theme of the 2010 International Total Survey Error Workshop is The Ongoing Evolution of Survey Methodology and the Impact on Total Survey Error. The workshop seeks presentations of research that explore or analyze the trade-offs of two or more sources of survey error within the context of relatively recent methodological or statistical approaches. However, abstracts that deal with the general topic of nonsampling error are welcome.  The workshop format is informal to encourage open discussion and sharing of ideas.  Thus, presentations discussing research still in progress or results of completed, unpublished research are quite appropriate. Papers on the following types of topics are of particular interest:

*       The impact of the TSE concept on the growth of survey methodology.

*       TSE and multiple frame, mixed mode survey design

*       Multiple sources of error in responsive/adaptive design

*       TSE implications for address-based sampling with one or more modes of data collection

*       Methodologies for comparing TSE for two or more modes of data collection.

*       Simultaneous evaluations of the contributions to TSE from two or more error sources in computer assisted, self administered surveys (e.g., nonresponse, coverage and measurement error)

*       The effect of very reluctant respondents on measurement error and nonresponse error

*       Integration of the TSE concept and six sigma approaches

*        Methods for simulating the effects of multiple error sources on the Total Survey Error (TSE).

*       New methods for estimating the components of the mean squared error..

*       Continuations of work presented in earlier ITSEWs.

Submission Process

In addition to the workshop presentations, the conference also includes a very informal poster and demo session as part of an evening social. Researchers should submit abstracts of approximately 500 words in length for either posters/demos or presentations.  Please indicate whether you 're submitting an abstract for a presentation, or for the more informal poster or demo format.  Also include an email address and affiliation for each author, as well as a phone number for the primary author.

Please submit your abstracts to Wendy Hicks at

WendyHicks@Westat.com by January 15, 2009.

Submitters will receive notifications on or around January 30, 2010.

Special audio-visual requests

The meeting room will have a laptop, a data projector, a screen and microphones.   Please indicate any special equipment requests (for 35mm slide projectors, audiotape recorders, VCRs, or Internet access) on the abstract submission.  We 'll do our best to meet special requests within budgetary constraints.
