ESRA 2011 Session on mixed-mode surveys

Nov 12 2010

Call for proposals

We invite you to submit the paper proposals for ESRA 2011 session Mixed-mode surveys: quality, costs, administration and optimization . The conference will be held in Lausanne, Switzerland, July 18-22, 2011.

The importance of mixed-mode surveys have increased over the recent years and gained special attention with a widespread use of web surveys. The web option is especially intriguing as it offers rapid data collection at low costs, but at the same time also introduces a whole spectrum of methodological problems. Cost-reduction pressures in survey research therefore foster implementing web surveys along with other modes of data collection. It is expected that such mixed-mode designs will merge the benefits of different approaches: lower research costs due to incorporation of the web mode and sufficient coverage and response rates provided by other modes like mail, telephone or face-to-face surveys.

This session addresses methodological challenges that accompany general implementation of mixed-mode surveys, particularly those involving the web mode. These include issues related to response rates, mode effects, measurement errors, administrative aspects as well as management and optimization. Within this context, a simultaneous consideration of costs and data quality deserves a special attention as it enables comprehensive evaluations of different mixed-mode survey designs.

Session coordinators: Vasja Vehovar & Nejc Berzelak, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia
